Problems starting a 2007 Toyota Hilux petrol engine: Possible engine control unit relay error
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Toyota Hilux with a petrol engine is experiencing starting issues, suspected to be caused by a faulty main relay in the engine control unit. The vehicle has high mileage, a good battery, and no dashboard warning lights, suggesting the main relay as a likely culprit. A similar issue was resolved in a 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser by replacing the main relay, costing €120. It is recommended to have the main relay checked at a workshop to confirm and resolve the problem.

Hey, thanks for your reply! My Hilux already has an impressive mileage of 271,577 KM. The battery is in good condition and there is no warning light on the dashboard. The last service was recently, but there were no abnormalities. So it sounds very likely to be the main relay, which you mentioned. It has already helped me. Thanks again for that!

Hey, no problem, I'm happy to help! If your battery is fine, no warning light is illuminated and the car was serviced shortly before the problem, it really does sound like a problem with the main relay. Sure, there are other issues that can cause this cranking problem, but based on my own experience, I would advise you to have the main relay checked. That seems to me to be the most likely scenario. Have it checked at the garage and keep us posted on what you find. It's always good to know how stories like this turn out. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, that takes me a long way forward. So I'll pop into the workshop and have the main relay checked. Hopefully that really is the culprit. I'll let you know what comes out of the inspection. Thanks again for your support!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser. I would describe my knowledge of cars as somewhat experienced, so I'm not completely green behind the ears. My car wouldn't start either and after a bit of troubleshooting at the garage it turned out that the main relay was faulty. The repair cost me €120, but after that the car ran smoothly again. But without having more information about your car, it's hard to say if it's exactly the same problem. Could you perhaps give a few more details about your car, such as mileage, battery condition or any warning lights on the dashboard? Hope that helps you a bit!
