Problems with Ford Transit petrol engine 2006: Black smoke, check engine light and loss of power

Hello everyone, I have a strange problem with my Ford Transit, petrol engine, built in 2006. The thing has been acting up lately: black smoke when accelerating, check engine light is on, starting problems in cold weather, engine loses power, jerks when accelerating, swallows more fuel than usual and the exhaust smells strangely strong. My assumption is that there is a fault in the mixture control, that the mixture is too rich. Have any of you ever had similar experiences and could give me some advice? I would be particularly interested to know what specific steps the garage took to solve the problem and any experience they have. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello, I happened to have a similar problem with my 2004 Ford Transit Connect. I'm not a car expert, but I've had a few experiences with problems like this. My garage told me that the fuel pressure regulator was defective. The repair cost me 250 euros, it wasn't that cheap, but since then it has been running like clockwork again. Perhaps you have a similar problem. It would be helpful if you could provide more information about your vehicle to better understand the situation and help in a more solution-oriented way. Hope this helps a little!

Hi, thanks for pointing out the fuel pressure regulator, that definitely sounds relevant. I'll have it checked in more detail. I didn't notice anything like that at 83,434 km or at the last service. I'll keep you posted if there's any news. Thanks again!

Hi there, you're welcome! The symptoms you described were quite similar to mine and the fuel pressure regulator was the cause. Vehicles, especially older models like your Ford Transit, can often have problems like this. It's always good to have a thorough investigation to be sure. I would be interested to know if you also noticed a malfunction in the mass air flow sensor? This could also be a symptom of a fuel mixture that is too rich. Please let us know if you have any news from the garage. It might also help other owners with similar problems. Good luck and hopefully it's nothing too serious. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Moin, thank you very much, these are really helpful tips! I will also have the mass air flow sensor checked. Hopefully it's nothing serious. I'll definitely let you know what the garage says and what happens next, maybe it can be helpful to others. In the meantime, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it won't be too expensive. Thanks again and have a good weekend!
