Problems with irregular shifting and grinding noises in the 2004 BMW 3 Series Diesel: Possible transmission control unit fault

Dear community, I have a problem with my BMW 3 Series Diesel, built in 2004. The gearbox slips and shifts totally irregularly and when changing gear it makes a grinding noise. I suspect that the transmission control unit has a fault, but I'm not sure. Has anyone here ever had similar problems? How did you solve this at your garage? I would be very grateful for some advice or experience reports.
