Problems with preheating lamp, emission of black smoke and possible defective glow plug in Renault Clio Diesel 2007

Hi guys, I have a problem with my Renault Clio, diesel, year 2007, and hope you can help me. The preheat light won't go out, black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light is on and the car has problems with cold starting and poor fuel efficiency. Sometimes it won't even start and there seems to be a problem with the DPF regeneration. I suspect it could be due to a faulty glow plug, but I'm not sure. Have any of you ever had similar problems with your Clio and how did you solve it? What experiences have you had in the workshop? I'm looking forward to your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Renault Clio diesel is experiencing issues with the preheat light staying on, black smoke emission, a check engine light, cold starting problems, and poor fuel efficiency. These symptoms suggest a potential faulty glow plug, which could also be affecting the diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration. A similar issue was resolved in another vehicle by replacing the glow plug, and it is recommended to have the glow plug checked and possibly replaced to address these problems.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2005 Renault Megane, diesel, I'm not an expert but have a bit of experience with cars. My garage was quite helpful. We found that it was really down to a faulty glow plug due to wear and tear. They replaced it and it cost me 560 euros. But since then I haven't had any more problems. Could you maybe give more details about your car, like mileage, whether it's been serviced recently, etc.? That might help me to help you more accurately.

Hi, thanks for your help. My Clio now has 81464 km on the clock and the last service was a few months ago. Since then there have been no abnormalities until these problems started. That sounds like a possibility that it really could be the glow plug. I'll get it checked at the nearest garage, hopefully it's nothing else and more expensive. Your post has helped me a lot, thank you!

Hey, I'm glad I could help. It does sound like it could be the glow plug, especially if you're having these issues and your car has over 80,000km on it. If you last had a service a few months ago, they may not have noticed that the glow plug was old and worn when they serviced it. It can always happen, even at the best garages. Have it looked at there and hopefully it's just the glow plug. The cost should be similar to my Megane, maybe even a bit cheaper because the Clio is a smaller car. Of course, it's always annoying when something like this happens, but it could be much worse. Good luck and let me know what it was in the end.

Thank you very much for your advice and words of encouragement. I'll keep you posted on what it turns out to be. Hopefully it's just the glow plug so I can get the car going again quickly. See you then and thanks again for your support.
