Problems with Renault Modus Diesel 2005: Engine problems and poor fuel consumption - experiences and solutions wanted
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Renault Modus Diesel is experiencing issues such as black smoke during acceleration, the Check Engine light activation, engine stalling, power loss, uneven running, jerking, poor fuel consumption, strong exhaust smell, and idling noise. The suspected cause is a fault in the fuel composition. Suggested solutions include checking for a faulty cable or plug, inspecting the turbocharger and intercooler nozzle for defects, and reading the fault memory at a workshop to accurately diagnose and address the problem.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My Modus now has 105029 km on the clock, and I've had this problem for about a month now. Before that it ran without any problems. Your tip about the faulty cable/plug sounds interesting, I'll have to take a closer look or take it to the garage if necessary. Thanks for your advice in any case, I wouldn't have thought of that now!

Hey, no problem, you're welcome! A month is quite a while for such severe symptoms. But your car doesn't have that many kilometers on it yet. With that kind of mileage, the engine can have many different problems, not just the cable/plug. It could also be the turbocharger that is causing these symptoms. Check the turbo pressure. If it is too low, this would be a sign of a defective turbocharger. The cost of replacement is usually around 1000 to 2000 euros, depending on where you have it done. Be sure to also check the intercooler nozzle, as oil can collect there if the turbo is defective. If you don't find anything there, it could well be that only the cable/connector is broken. Above all, however, I would recommend taking it to a workshop if you are unsure. They can read out the fault memory and tell you exactly what the problem is. As a layman, you often make things worse just to save a few euros. Safety first.

Hey, those are really good points, thanks for the tips. I will definitely check the turbo pressure and the intercooler nozzle. As I'm pretty unsure, I'll probably also take my car to the garage and have the fault memory read out. You're right, I don't want to make things worse. The cost of a new turbocharger is really high, I hope it's just the cable. Thanks again for your help and tips, I really appreciate it!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2003 Renault Scenic Diesel. I have some experience with cars, but I'm not an expert. In the end it was a faulty cable/plug, which I had fixed at the garage for 95 euros. The guys there were super helpful and found the fault quickly. You could also have such a cable problem. Could you give me more information about your car? E.g. mileage, whether you've had similar problems before and how long the problem has existed? Then I might be able to help you more precisely. Just an idea, but maybe it could be the same fault.
