In my case, however, it was a thermoswitch that was defective. Try to see if the air conditioning emits cold air when the engine is running and the ignition is switched on. If so, it could actually be the air conditioning compressor. However, this can usually be replaced fairly easily. So don't let this put you off, there could also be a cheap solution.
