Problems with the electric steering column adjustment in Mercedes GLA Class 2014 - tips and workshop experience wanted

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Mercedes GLA Class, petrol engine, model year 2014. The electric steering column adjustment no longer makes a sound. I suspect it could be a defect in the motor for the steering column adjustment. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can give me some tips? I would like to understand more about this before I go to the garage. How did you solve the problem in the end and what was your experience at the garage? Any help is welcome. Thank you!

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Mercedes GLA Class owner is experiencing issues with the electric steering column adjustment, which has stopped making a sound. The suspected cause is a defect in the motor for the steering column adjustment. A similar case with a 2012 Mercedes A Class revealed a defective control unit, suggesting this could be a potential cause. Solutions include checking the fuses, wiring, and plugs, and seeking a second opinion from a garage to confirm the issue and avoid high repair costs.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2012 Mercedes A Class, just like your GLA Class. My experience with cars is rather limited, but I still tried to deal with the problem. At some point, however, I did go to my garage because the problem couldn't really be solved. It turned out that the control unit was defective. The repair and the new control unit cost me around 1000 euros. Could you perhaps share some information such as the model and year of your car? Maybe then I could give you more details and help you further.

Thanks for the answer! Interesting experience with your A-Class. My mileage is 126889 km and it's been a few months since the last service. Is this a common problem with the ECU? Spending a few thousand euros isn't exactly cheap. Would it make sense to get a second opinion? I mean, with such high repair costs. What other factors could be causing this problem? There are just too many questions in my head. Any more advice would be great!

Hey, sure, I understand your concerns, believe me, I wasn't happy about spending so much money on the garage either. It's possible that the mileage on your car is also a factor. But to say whether the ECU is a common problem is difficult, it depends on so many factors. The whole system is quite complex, so there could be many reasons for this fault. The fuses could also be the problem, have you checked them? It could also be that the problem is in the wiring or the plugs. Getting a second opinion is definitely a good idea, especially if there are high costs involved. This way you can be sure that you are really doing the right thing. Ultimately, it's also a question of safety. So I would recommend that you go to the garage as soon as possible. Hopefully I've been able to help a little. All the best!

Hey, thanks for the detailed reply and advice! I haven't checked the fuses yet, that could indeed be the problem. Getting a second opinion sounds like a good idea too. I will definitely go to the garage as soon as possible. Health and safety come first, of course. Thanks again for the help, really very valuable! I'll keep you posted as soon as I know more. Until then, all the best to you too!
