Problems with the gearbox and indicator light in BMW 1 Series Diesel from 2008: experience and solutions wanted

Hey guys, I've got a problem with my 2008 BMW 1 Series (diesel). The indicator light is on and the gearbox is acting up - it slips and shifts irregularly. I suspect it could be a fault with the gearbox selector lever. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can give me tips on how to narrow it down? I would like to know how your garage solved the problem and what your experiences are. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2008 BMW 1 Series diesel is experiencing issues with the gearbox slipping and shifting irregularly, accompanied by an indicator light. The suspected cause is a fault with the gearbox selector lever. A similar issue in another BMW model was resolved by fixing a misaligned or defective cable to the gearbox. It is suggested to check the cable as a potential solution to the problem.

Hey, had a similar problem with my 2010 BMW 3 series (also a diesel). I'm not a professional, but I do have some experience with cars. My garage found a faulty cable to the gearbox that was misaligned/defective. It cost 260 euros to fix it. Sounds like something similar in your case. Could you provide the exact vehicle information? Perhaps I can then give you some more information.

Hey, thanks for the answer! I drive a 2008 BMW 1 Series with diesel. I already have almost 150k kilometers on the clock, but so far everything has always worked out. At the last inspection a while ago, everything was still great. The cable thing is a really good idea, I'll definitely have it checked. Thanks for the tip!

Hey, no problem, I'm glad if I can help! With 150k km on the odometer, something can go wrong, it happens to the best of us. I know the model you're riding quite well too, I used to ride it myself. I would really advise you to have the cable checked. Mine was pretty similar and it's been running smoothly again since it was replaced. It's not the cheapest solution, but hopefully you'll have peace of mind for the time being! Let me know what comes out. Have a good trip and all the best!
