Problems with the transmission control unit in Opel Signum 2004 - experience and solutions wanted
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a 2004 Opel Signum experiencing issues like slipping, erratic shifting, and grinding noises, suspected to be caused by a faulty transmission control unit. A similar problem was encountered by another person with an Opel Vectra, where the solution involved replacing the transmission control unit at a cost of 1000 euros. The advice given is to have the transmission control unit checked, as it might require replacement, though there is hope for a potentially less costly repair.

Hi, thanks for your feedback! It's good to know that I'm not alone with this problem. My Signum has an automatic gearbox and the engine code is Z18XE. I've just had a look at the documentation and according to the checkbook, my last inspection was at 161242 km. Your experience with the repair source gives me some direction, even if the amount of 1000 euros sounds hefty. But if the car runs again afterwards, it's probably worth the investment... Thank you and best regards!

You're welcome! Oh, so you have a Z18XE engine with automatic transmission. Well, I can only speak from my Opel Vectra, but the symptoms were really similar. If I were you, I would really have the transmission control unit checked, although it's an expensive business. But you know what they say: "Buy cheap, buy twice." In the case of my Vectra, the control unit had to be completely replaced. So the 1000 euros included the replacement and installation of the new part. If you're lucky, it may only be possible to replace one part and it will be cheaper. I hope I was able to help you! Good luck and let us know how it turns out! Best regards!

Hello, thank you very much for your advice! Yes, the saying "Buy cheap, buy twice" really makes sense in this context. Your further information makes me feel a little more reassured about driving to the workshop. I'll have the transmission control unit checked and hope that a cheaper solution than the Vectra is possible. I will definitely keep you posted on the outcome. Thanks again and best regards!

Hi, I once had a similar problem with my 2001 Opel Vectra, it seems we share similar symptoms. I have little experience with cars, but my workshop visit, which helped me after many headaches, might also help you. At my garage they found that the transmission control unit was faulty. So it wasn't a simple repair that I could do myself. The cost of fixing the problem was 1000 euros, which was rather high in my opinion, but it was worth it as the car ran perfectly again afterwards. What type of transmission does your vehicle have? Automatic or manual? Also the exact engine code could be helpful to give you more details. Good luck with the repair and hope I could help! Regards
