Punto Gear Selection Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Fiat Punto with a 1.2 gasoline engine is experiencing issues with the gear selection display not working, grinding noises when shifting, and a slipping gearbox, accompanied by an error code. Control unit, huh? Is that difficult to get to and check? What exactly was wrong with yours?

On the Saab, it wasn't too bad to access, but I'm not sure about the Punto. From what I remember, it was throwing all sorts of errors and causing the weird shifting. Best to take it to a workshop; those things can be tricky to diagnose and even trickier to fix. Better safe than sorry, especially with transmissions!

Thanks for the tip! I took it to a mechanic, and you were spot on – it was indeed the control unit. The estimated repair cost is around 1000€. I'll get it replaced. Thanks again!

Sounds familiar! I had something similar happen with my old Saab 9-3. The symptoms were almost identical – the gear indicator went haywire, and the transmission started acting up. Did you check the control unit? That was the culprit in my case.
