Qashqai Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor Issue

I'm writing to report an issue with my 2011 Nissan Qashqai diesel. It has about 33543 km on the odometer. Recently, the engine warning light, and sometimes the transmission warning light, come on. Diagnostic scans show an error with the transmission oil temperature sensor. Also, the gearbox sometimes goes into emergency mode, with slipping, unclean shifts, and sometimes grinding noises when shifting gears. I checked the transmission oil level, but I don't know what to do next.

That sounds tricky. Do the problems happen more often under certain driving conditions, like when the engine is cold or after a long drive? You checked the oil level, but was it done when the engine was cold? The dipstick may give a false reading if the oil is warm. Also, is the oil the right grade?

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked the oil level when the engine was at operating temperature. Could an inaccurate oil level reading at operating temperature be the only cause of these sensor malfunctions and the gearbox behavior? Also, how important is the oil grade?

Checking the level when hot could give a false reading. Low oil level can definitely cause those symptoms, triggering the sensor and leading to the other issues. The correct grade is also critical for smooth operation and sensor accuracy. If you're not sure, I'd suggest taking it to a professional. It may save you trouble.

Thanks for the advice. After checking the oil level cold, I saw it was low. I topped it up with the correct grade of oil, and the issues are gone. I installed a new sensor because of the logged errors. The whole repair including parts and labor cost 365€. Thanks for your time and help.
