Quest oil pressure light and engine noise

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2001 Nissan Quest, equipped with a gasoline engine. Recently, the oil pressure warning lamp has been illuminating intermittently, accompanied by loud, unusual mechanical noises from the engine. I've checked the oil level, which appears normal, and recently performed an oil change, ensuring correct oil viscosity and filter were used. Could a faulty oil pressure sensor be the culprit, or is there a possibility of a more serious underlying problem, such as a defect in the oil pump?

Summary of the thread

A 2001 Nissan Quest is experiencing intermittent oil pressure warning light activation and loud mechanical engine noises. Despite normal oil levels and a recent oil change, these symptoms persist. Potential causes include a faulty oil pressure sensor or a more serious issue like a failing oil pump. It is recommended to have the oil pressure tested with a gauge and possibly inspect the oil pump, with professional diagnosis advised to determine the exact problem.

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms on my Quest - the oil pressure light and the noises. Have you checked the oil pressure with a gauge? It's possible your oil pump is failing.

I haven't checked the oil pressure with a gauge, as I don't have one. Based on your experience, would you recommend this as the next step? Could a clogged oil filter also cause similar symptoms, or is a failing oil pump the more likely culprit given the loud mechanical noises?

Yes, get the oil pressure tested. A clogged filter is possible, but the noises point to the oil pump not doing its job. I ended up having to replace mine. Best get it to a workshop.

I appreciate your input. It seems prudent to have the oil pressure professionally tested and the oil pump inspected. I'll take it to a trusted workshop for a thorough diagnosis. The repair ended up costing 755€, which was a bit painful but necessary. Thanks again for your guidance!
