QX DPF Nightmare: Black Smoke & Performance Issues

Hi all, having some serious trouble with my 2019 Infiniti QX (diesel). The car's been acting up lately blowing black smoke when I accelerate, jerking pretty badly, and there's a strong diesel smell. The check engine light is on, and the DPF isn't regenerating properly. I've hit about 108K kilometers, and I'm really worried about taking it to just any mechanic after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar DPF-related issues? What was your repair experience like, and which repair shop did you trust with the job? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Alex

Hey Alex, I feel you I had almost identical issues with my 2016 Infiniti Q50 diesel last year. Black smoke, rough acceleration, and that annoying DPF light were my constant companions for a week before I got it sorted. Took it to the Infiniti dealership after my diagnostic scan showed the DPF was internally defective. Turns out the DPF was completely clogged, and manual regeneration wasn't cutting it anymore. They had to do a full DPF replacement along with cleaning the EGR valve, which was also gunked up pretty badly. It was definitely a serious job had my car in the shop for three days. They needed to remove quite a bit of stuff to get to the DPF unit. The mechanic showed me the old filter, and it was properly blocked with soot and ash. No wonder the car was struggling! Since the repair, my Q50's been running like new no more smoke, smooth acceleration, and proper regeneration cycles. I'd strongly recommend going to your brand's dealership for this one. DPF systems are pretty complex, and you want someone who knows these engines inside out. Good luck!

Hey! I really appreciate you sharing your experience. The dealer's work sounds spot on. I'm actually curious do you remember roughly how much the whole job set you back? Also, has everything stayed running smoothly since the repair? I'm asking because I might be looking at something similar with mine soon, and I'd love to know what I'm potentially getting into. Thanks for any info you can share!

Hey again Alex! Happy to help with those details! I recently got my Q50 back from the mechanic, and I'm glad to report it's running absolutely perfect now. The whole job came to 1550€ not cheap, I know, but worth every penny considering how well it's performing now. The heavy load issue with the DPF is completely sorted. The best part is, all those annoying symptoms the black smoke, jerky acceleration, and that pesky diesel smell they're all gone. The car feels like new again! The mechanic showed me that the DPF was internally defective, which explained all the trouble. They did a thorough job fixing it. Honestly, if you're experiencing similar issues, I'd say just bite the bullet and get it done. Yes, it's a chunk of money, but it's better than risking more expensive damage down the line. Plus, the peace of mind knowing everything's working properly is priceless. Let me know if you need any other info always happy to share my experience!

Thanks so much for all the details! Actually, I took your advice and bit the bullet just got my car back from the mechanic yesterday. You were spot on about everything! Went to the Infiniti dealership and they found pretty much the same issues you had. The whole thing cost me around 1600€, but honestly, it was worth every cent. They replaced the DPF, cleaned the EGR valve, and did a full system check while they were at it. The difference is like night and day! No more black smoke, the jerking's completely gone, and that awful diesel smell has vanished. The car's running smooth as silk now. They even showed me the old DPF it was completely clogged up, just like yours was. Really appreciate you sharing your experience it gave me the confidence to get it sorted properly instead of trying to find a cheaper fix somewhere else. Definitely the right call!
