R Klasse Headlight Auto Leveling Problem

My 2005 Mercedes R Klasse diesel has an auto-leveling headlight issue. I'm getting an error and the low beams are misaligned. The car has 251407 km. Any advice on troubleshooting or if it could be the control module or light intensity sensor? I've checked the electrical connectors and they seem normal.

I had a similar problem with my R Klasse. Your symptoms sound familiar. It turned out to be a faulty servomotor in one of the headlights, like you suspect. Did you check the wiring harness going to the headlight assembly? Sometimes the wires can get brittle and crack, causing connection issues. Have you scanned the car with a diagnostic tool for fault codes related to the headlight range control?

Thanks for the quick response! Yes, I scanned the car, and it's throwing a code related to the headlight range control, specifically indicating a fault with the servomotor. I'm hesitant to replace the entire headlight assembly if it's just the motor. Regarding the wiring harness, is there a specific area that's prone to damage? Did you attempt to replace the servomotor yourself, or did you take it to a mechanic?

I understand your hesitation about replacing the whole assembly. The servomotor is usually integrated into the headlight unit, making it difficult to replace separately. For the wiring harness, pay close attention to the section that flexes when the headlight is adjusted. That's where I found the damage. I ended up taking it to a workshop, because I was concerned about properly aligning the headlights after the repair. Considering the error code and your symptoms, it's best to take your car to the shop.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I took your advice and brought the car to a trusted workshop. They confirmed it was indeed a faulty servomotor within the headlight. They replaced the entire headlight assembly, recalibrated the system, and now everything is working perfectly. The final bill was 1040€, which was a bit painful, but at least the problem is solved. I appreciate your help in narrowing down the issue!
