RAV4 Mass Air Flow Sensor Issues

Hey guys, my 2006 Toyota RAV4 with a gasoline engine is giving me fits. I think my Mass Air Flow Meter is shot. I'm getting higher fuel consumption, the engine occasionally stalls at idle which is super annoying, and the check engine light is mocking me from the dashboard. Also, I've noticed some smoke when I really put my foot down. Car has 161032 km on the clock. Anyone else experience this? Could a defective mass air flow sensor really be the culprit behind all this?

I had similar symptoms in my RAV4. Seems like a classic case of sensor failure. Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor first? Sometimes that can help, but if it's truly gone, cleaning won't do much.

Yeah, I tried cleaning it with MAF cleaner, but no dice. Did you end up replacing your MAF sensor? And if so, did that solve all the issues you were seeing? Just trying to avoid throwing parts at it without a little more certainty.

Replacing the MAF sensor did fix the problem on my RAV4. The performance decline and engine stalling vanished immediately. Given you've already tried cleaning it, a new sensor is probably the way to go. If you are not familiar replacing this component, better leave it to the workshop

Thanks for the input! I went to my workshop, they did a diagnostics and eventually the sensor was replaced. Costed me around 365€, but everything's back to normal now. No more smoke, and the check engine light is gone. Fuel economy seems to have improved too.
