RAV4 Steering Angle Sensor Fault

I'm having trouble with my 2003 Toyota RAV4, electric engine, at 45528 km. Steering is getting harder, like the power steering is failing, and the steering wheel vibrates. Diagnostics point to a bad steering angle sensor with faulty coding, which might affect traction control and electronic stability. Has anyone seen this before?

I had nearly the same problem with my RAV4! The vibrating steering wheel is awful, isn't it? First, have you checked your wheel alignment? Sometimes a bad alignment can trigger the electronic stability control and cause similar symptoms. Although, if it's the steering angle sensor, that sounds like a bigger issue. Does the problem get worse at certain speeds, or when turning?

Thanks for the quick reply. The symptoms are consistent, no matter the speed. Can you tell me more about your issue? Did it involve the steering column, and was it related to the electronic stability system?

The electronic stability system was definitely involved. The error codes pointed directly to the steering sensor. It wasn't a mechanical issue with the steering column itself, but the faulty sensor was sending incorrect data, which then messed with the electronic stability programming. Given the symptoms, you're probably best off getting it checked at a reliable workshop.

Thanks for the advice. I spoke with a technician, and they confirmed the steering angle sensor's coding was faulty and needed replacement. The total was 195€. After the repair, the symptoms are gone.
