Renault Modus won't start transmission error

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my 2005 Renault Modus (gasoline engine). It won't start, and the check engine light is on. Also, the gearbox seems to be slipping, and shifting is really rough. The error memory shows a transmission error, which sounds expensive. Could it be related to the parking position because it seems like it's not recognizing when it's in Park? Anyone had similar problems?

Hey, I have a Modus too, and your problem sounds awfully familiar! I had a similar issue a while back. The car wouldn't start sometimes, and the transmission was acting up. Did you check the transmission sensor? It might be sending the wrong signals. It's like the car thinks it's not in Park or Neutral, so it won't let you start it. It could also be a faulty park brake, as this affects the signal

Thanks for the quick response! Where exactly is the transmission sensor located, and is it something I could potentially check myself? Also, you mentioned a faulty park brake signal - could this really prevent the car from starting? I assumed the two systems were separate, but I have little expertise.

Okay, so the transmission sensor is usually located on the transmission itself, but honestly, it can be a pain to get to without the right tools. And yes, the park brake signal, if faulty, can definitely prevent the car from starting. The car's computer is designed that way for safety. It's all linked together like a chain, and if one link is broken, the whole thing doesn't work. I would recommend taking it to a workshop, they can check the control unit.

Thanks a lot for your help! I'll take it to a workshop and have them check the transmission sensor and the park brake signal, as you suggested. The mechanic confirmed the control unit is defective. Repair will be around 1000€, but at least I know what's wrong. Appreciate the quick and informative responses!
