Rifter Engine Start Problem

Sounds like a possible immobilizer issue. The symptoms you describe are common. Does the security light behave normally? Have you tried your spare key? Sometimes the transponder signal gets weak or corrupted.

The security light seems normal, but I haven't tried the spare key yet. Where exactly is the transponder? And if it's the programming, can I fix that myself, or am I looking at a trip to the shop?

The transponder is embedded in the key itself. Given the symptoms and error code, incorrect key programming is a likely cause. While theoretically fixable with the right software, it's generally workshop territory to avoid further issues with your anti-theft system. Best to get it diagnosed properly.
