RS3 Engine Heat & Air Flap Issues Raise Red Flags

Having issues with my 2023 RS3. The check engine light recently came on and the engine is running hotter than usual. I suspect its related to the active air flap system, as I noticed some unusual behavior from the front grille area. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and had their active air flap or flap motor replaced? Would be great to hear about your repair experience and costs before heading to the shop. Should I get a diagnostic scan first, or is this a clear case for the workshop?

I had a similar issue with my 2021 S3, also with a 2.0 TFSI engine. Having some experience with thermal management systems, I first got a diagnostic scan which confirmed issues with the grille shutter system. The fault code pointed to the flap motor being defective, causing improper airflow management and higher engine temperatures. Initially tried cleaning the mechanism, but this only helped temporarily. Took it to a workshop where they confirmed the electromechanism was defective and needed replacement. Total repair cost was 590 Euro, including parts and labor. The repair solved both the temperature issues and the check engine light. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage, Any other warning lights, Whether you notice the grille shutters moving at all, Temperature gauge readings, Any unusual sounds from the front end This would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with my car. Getting a diagnostic scan first is definitely worth it, helps pinpoint whether its actually the flap motor or possibly another component in the thermal management system.

Latest service was at 194816 KM. Got my fault codes read at a workshop and it turns out the air intake flaps were indeed stuck. The cooling system showed normal pressure, but temps were still higher than usual. Shop quoted me 780 Euro for the complete flap motor replacement, which seems quite steep compared to your repair costs. I can confirm the grille shutters arent moving at all now, even during cold starts. No unusual sounds coming from the front, but the engine temp sits about 8-10 degrees higher than normal. Guess I should bite the bullet and get it fixed before summer hits. At least knowing the exact issue helps rule out more serious cooling system problems.

Thanks for the update on your RS3 situation. I understand your concern about the repair costs, the 780 Euro quote is indeed higher than what I paid for my S3, but unfortunately the RS3 components typically come with a premium price tag. After getting my flap motor replaced, I noticed an immediate improvement in engine temperatures. The air intake system really is crucial for proper thermal management. In my case, waiting would have likely led to more serious issues, especially since the active air flaps were completely non-functional, similar to what youre experiencing. The diagnostic scan definitely helped confirm our suspicions about the flap motor being the culprit. While the price difference is notable, I would recommend proceeding with the repair given the matching symptoms, stuck flaps, elevated temperatures, and the check engine light. The thermal stress on the engine isnt worth risking, especially considering your mileage. Perhaps try getting a second quote, but be cautious about significantly cheaper offers as the genuine parts are essential for proper function of the active air flap system.

Thanks for the input. After getting a second quote that came in at 750 Euro, I decided to go ahead with the original shop since they already did the diagnostic work and seem to know their stuff. Better to fix the air intake system now than risk more serious engine issues down the line. The check engine light and higher temps were definitely concerning, but Im relieved its just the flap motor and not a more serious cooling system problem. Will schedule the repair for next week and report back on how it goes. At least I know what to expect now in terms of the repair process and outcomes. Good to hear others have dealt with similar thermal management issues and got them resolved successfully. While the cost is steep, protecting the engine has to be the priority here.
