RS3 Exhaust Flap Failures Causing Performance Issues

Got an issue with my 2022 RS3 (144660km) that's really bugging me. Engine performance seems off with loud exhaust noise, especially after cold starts. The exhaust system is acting up and throwing error codes. Pretty sure the exhaust flaps are the culprit here. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I want to know if anyone else faced similar issues with their RS3? Mainly curious about repair costs and trusted shops that properly handle exhaust valve problems.

Had the same issue on my 2019 RS4. The exhaust flap actuator failed, causing irregular exhaust noise and performance issues. The exhaust system became notably louder during cold starts, similar to your symptoms. The root cause was a failed electrical component in the flap actuator mechanism. This caused the exhaust flaps to stay partially open, creating inconsistent backpressure. The malfunction triggered multiple error codes related to the exhaust components. This is a known issue that requires proper diagnosis and repair. The exhaust flap actuator needed complete replacement, not just a reset or cleaning. While not immediately dangerous to drive, leaving it unfixed can lead to exhaust blockage and potential engine performance problems. The repair took about 4 hours at the shop. They needed specialized diagnostic tools to properly calibrate the new actuator with the exhaust system. The replacement part must be coded to work with the vehicle electronics. Worth noting that aftermarket parts often dont work well for this specific repair. The exhaust flap control system is quite sensitive and requires OEM components for proper function.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the RS4 exhaust flap actuator issue. It matches my symptoms perfectly, especially the cold start noise and error codes. Got mine fixed last month with a full actuator replacement and the exhaust system is working flawlessly now. Can you recall what the total repair cost was for your fix? Also curious if youve had any other exhaust components act up since the actuator replacement? Its been a few weeks for me but want to stay alert for any related issues that might pop up.

Glad the repair worked out for you. After my RS4 exhaust flap motor replacement it cost 190 Euro total, including labor and programming. The exhaust flaps have been working perfectly since the fix, with no additional issues from any other exhaust components. The flap actuator replacement completely resolved the cold start noise problems and error codes. Its been over a year now and the exhaust system remains properly controlled with no warning lights or performance issues. The repair shop did mention its important to keep the flap mechanism clean from road debris, but otherwise these parts tend to be reliable once properly replaced. My experience suggests that once the faulty exhaust valve is fixed, related components usually continue working as designed. Just keep an ear out for any unusual exhaust noise changes, but you likely wont see the same flap actuator problem again.

Thanks everyone for the helpful feedback. After dealing with this headache, I finally got my RS3 fixed and wanted to share the outcome. Took it to a certified shop last week that specializes in performance vehicles. The mechanic confirmed it was definitely the exhaust flap motor causing the issues. Total repair came to 220 Euro including parts, labor and programming. The engine performance is back to normal and that annoying cold start noise is completely gone. They did a full diagnosis first and found no other exhaust blockage or related problems. The entire repair took about 3 hours. The exhaust repair included updating the control module, which they said helps prevent future flap issues. Been driving it for a few days now and the exhaust system is working perfectly, no more error codes or strange noises. Really relieved to have this sorted properly after my previous bad experience. The shop was thorough and actually explained everything they were doing, which I appreciated.
