RS7 Starting and Stalling: Bad Ignition Coil Alert

Thanks for sharing your experience with the RS6. I had very similar issues on my RS7 and it turned out to be bad ignition coils too. The car starting issues gradually got worse until it was nearly impossible to drive. The mechanic found 3 bad coils and replaced all of them as a set, along with spark plugs. Just curious, how much did the repair end up costing you? And have you had any engine start problems since the fix? Mine has been running perfectly for about 5 months now but always good to hear long-term feedback from others.

The ignition coil replacement on my RS6 was definitely worth it. Total repair cost came to 52 Euro for a blown fuse that was causing additional issues with the ignition switch. I needed to get all coils replaced too, but thankfully those were covered under my service plan. The good news is that after fixing the ignition switch and coils, I havent experienced any starting problems whatsoever. No more dashboard lights, no rough running, and the engine start is consistently smooth. Its been over 18 months now and the car runs perfectly. Smart move getting all the coils replaced at once. When one fails, the others are usually not far behind, especially at higher mileages. Regular maintenance really helps prevent these starter motor issues from developing in the first place.

Thanks for the advice. Just wanted to share how things turned out. Took the car to a different mechanic this time who immediately suspected the ignition coils after hearing the symptoms. Diagnostic scan confirmed multiple coil failures. Total bill came to 890 Euro including labor, they replaced all ignition coils and spark plugs. The dashboard lights are now gone and the engine starts perfectly every time. The rough running has completely disappeared too. What a difference proper car electronics make when they are working correctly! The mechanic showed me the old coils and you could clearly see the wear. Apparently its pretty common for multiple ignition coils to fail around 100k km on these engines. Glad I got it sorted before any serious engine damage occurred. All fixed now and running like new for the past two weeks. Really appreciate the help in diagnosing this, saved me from paying for unnecessary repairs at the first shop who missed the real issue.

As a RS6 owner with similar symptoms last year, this sounds like a classic ignition coil failure issue. The unusual stalling, rough running, and starting problems match what I experienced at 95k km. When the starter motor turns but the engine struggles, its often related to the car electronics, specifically the ignition system. In my case, two ignition coils had failed, causing misfires and irregular running. The diagnosis showed error codes pointing to cylinders 2 and 4. The symptoms became worse over time, from occasional rough starts to complete stalling while driving. This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention, as failed ignition coils can damage other engine components if left unchecked. Some key indicators that point to ignition coil failure: Engine misfires at idle, Drop in power during acceleration, Check engine light flashing, Rough running gets worse in wet weather The fix involves testing each ignition coil and replacing the faulty ones. Its common practice to replace all coils at once since they tend to fail around the same mileage. The job also typically includes new spark plugs for optimal performance. Consider having a full diagnostic scan before the repair shop visit, it will help pinpoint exactly which components in the ignition system are failing.
