S Klasse lighting issues

My 2012 Mercedes S Klasse with a gasoline engine is having some strange lighting issues. The lights randomly switch on, and I've found an error code related to the light switch in the car's memory. Could this be a faulty light switch, or is it more likely an electrical problem? I'm thinking maybe a bad cable or plug connection is causing this. I hope the repair cost won't be too high; the mechanic quoted around 95€.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my S Klasse. My dashboard lights were acting up, and it turned out to be something with the dimmer switch. Did the mechanic check the dimmer switch specifically? It might be related to the electrical problem you mentioned, especially if the error code points to the automotive switch. I remember reading somewhere that faulty light switches can cause all sorts of weird electrical problems.

He mentioned the light switch in general, but not the dimmer switch specifically. Is the dimmer switch a separate component, or is it integrated into the main light switch? I'm trying to figure out if I should push him to check it, since I'm not sure how to do it myself.

I believe it's integrated, but I'm not 100% sure. My memory is a little hazy. Honestly, I'd suggest taking it to the workshop and specifically asking them to check the cable and plug connections, as you initially suspected. If they find nothing there, then mention the dimmer switch. It's better to have them diagnose it properly than to start replacing parts randomly. Could save you money in the long run.

Thanks for the advice. I took it back to the mechanic, and you were right about checking the connections first. Turns out it was a loose plug connection to the light switch. They fixed it, cleared the error, and the lights are working fine now. The bill was exactly 95€ as expected. Appreciate the help!
