S10 Diesel Smoke and Preheating Lamp Issue

I own a 2013 Chevrolet S10 with a diesel engine, and lately I've been experiencing some really annoying issues. A few weeks ago, the preheating lamp on the dashboard wouldn't switch off, and the check engine light came on. Now my truck is puffing out smoke when I accelerate. I have already driven 222103 km. I suspect the glow control unit, and the diagnostic test told me that the cable or plug connection of the component is defective. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I'm really worried about what this might cost me!

Summary of the thread

The owner of a 2013 Chevrolet S10 with a diesel engine experienced issues with the preheating lamp not switching off and the check engine light coming on, accompanied by smoke during acceleration. A diagnostic test indicated a defective cable or plug connection in the glow control unit. A similar issue was resolved by addressing a corroded connector on the glow plug control module. The suggested solution was to inspect and possibly replace the faulty connector or wiring harness, which successfully resolved the problem after professional repair.

I had a similar issue with my 2015 Opel Insignia, which also has a diesel engine. The symptoms sound very familiar. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty connection to the glow plug control module. Have you checked the wiring and connectors for any signs of corrosion or damage? Also, have you tried running a diagnostic test to pinpoint the exact error code? This can help narrow down the problem.

Yes, the diagnostic test indicated that the cable or plug connection of the component is defective. Which connection was defective in your case? How did you fix the problem, and how much did it cost you?

In my case, it was a corroded connector on the glow plug control module itself. I tried cleaning it, but the corrosion was too severe. Based on your description and the diagnostic results, it sounds like you're facing a similar situation. I would suggest taking your S10 to a reliable workshop for a proper inspection and repair. They should be able to replace the faulty connector or wiring harness. The mechanic recommended a new control unit but I managed to just replace the cable. I'm afraid you might need professional help to resolve this issue.

I took the car to the workshop as you recommended, and it turned out that your assumption was spot on. The mechanic found a defective connection at the glow control unit. They replaced the cable, and now everything is working fine again. The repair cost me 95€ - I'm so relieved it wasn't anything more serious. Thanks again for sharing your experience; it really helped me!
