S2000 VANOS Solenoid Issue

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2005 Honda S2000. It's got a gasoline engine and about 200,000km on it. The check engine light keeps popping up, and my fuel consumption seems way higher than usual. I scanned the codes and it's pointing to a problem with the inlet VANOS mechanics. Could it be a faulty VANOS solenoid or maybe an electrical issue? Anyone experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Honda S2000 owner experienced a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, with diagnostic codes indicating an issue with the inlet VANOS mechanics. The problem was suspected to be a faulty VANOS solenoid or an electrical issue. A similar case involved oil sludge affecting variable timing, which was resolved by cleaning and replacing a solenoid. The owner eventually had a faulty camshaft solenoid valve and wiring fixed at a local shop, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

VANOS on an S2000? That's not usually a problem area, but hey, anything can happen. You mentioned the check engine light and higher fuel consumption. Does it feel like it's misfiring at all? I had similar symptoms once; turned out to be oil sludge messing with the variable timing. What kind of oil have you been using, and how often do you change it?

Misfiring? Hmm, I haven't really noticed any obvious misfires, but maybe it's subtle. I've been using fully synthetic oil and changing it roughly every 10,000km. Oil sludge, you say? How did you diagnose that, and what did you do to fix it?

Yeah, mine wasn't a super obvious misfire, more like a slight hesitation. As for the oil sludge, my mechanic spotted it when he was checking the VANOS solenoid valves. Honestly, at that point, I just let him handle it. He cleaned everything out and replaced a solenoid. I'd suggest getting a professional to take a look; could save you a headache. Sounds like it's heading to the same resolution. It's probably cheaper than you imaging as well.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to my local shop and they found a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, like you mentioned. That and some wiring fixed it. Cost me about 250€, so not too bad. Runs like a charm now!
