S4 Air Suspension Failure Causing Uneven Ride Height

My S4 (2020, 28k km) has been acting up with the air suspension system lately. The car sits noticeably lower on one side and wont lift anymore, plus Im getting error messages and warning lights in the dash. The headlights are also pointing at weird angles. Pretty sure its a compressor failure, but my last mechanic experience wasnt great. Has anyone dealt with similar suspension components issues on their S4? What was the fix and how much did it cost? Looking for recommendations on what to expect when I take it in.

Had a similar malfunction on my S5 (2017) last summer. The air suspension system showed the same symptoms, uneven ride height and error messages. After inspection, it turned out the issue was more complex than just a compressor failure. The main problem was traced to faulty wiring connections at the suspension pump, causing intermittent communication errors with the level sensors. This malfunction affected the entire air suspension system, including the auto-leveling headlights. The suspension components needed thorough diagnostics to pinpoint multiple air leaks around the valve block assembly. The repair involved: Testing all suspension level sensors, Replacing damaged wiring harness, Resealing air line connections, Recalibrating the system This was a serious issue requiring specialized diagnostic equipment. The repair took 2 full days at an authorized workshop. Air suspension problems typically need immediate attention to prevent damage to other components. Would recommend having it checked by a certified technician who specifically knows these systems, as incorrect diagnosis can lead to unnecessary parts replacement.

Thanks for the detailed response. My issue does sound very similar to what you experienced, especially with the load leveling problems and error messages. Im relieved to hear it wasnt just compressor failure but rather a wiring and air leak issue that could be fixed. Can you recall what the total repair cost was? Also curious if youve had any recurring suspension problems since the repair was done? I want to make sure I budget properly and know what to watch out for going forward with my S4.

After visiting the mechanic last week, I can give you a positive update on my situation. The issue turned out to be much simpler than my initial experience suggested. The suspension pump was actually fine, the root cause was a faulty cable connection to the compressor, which triggered the load leveling system errors. The fix was straightforward: the technician repaired the defective wiring connection for just 95 Euro. Since the repair, the air suspension system has worked flawlessly. No more uneven ride height issues or warning lights, and the headlights are properly aligned again. This experience shows how suspension components can sometimes appear to have major failures when the actual problem is relatively minor. I havent had any recurring issues with the compressor or other suspension parts in the past 6 months. My advice would be to have a qualified technician check the electrical connections first before assuming worst-case scenarios about major component replacements.

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to share my experience. The air struts diagnosis revealed it was indeed similar to what you described, mainly electrical issues rather than a complete compressor failure. They found corroded wiring connections affecting the suspension pump performance, which explained the uneven ride height. Total repair came to 280 Euro, covering: Wiring harness replacement, System diagnostic check, Air leak testing, Suspension recalibration The work took about 4 hours. The mechanic was thorough and showed me the damaged components. The suspension system is now working perfectly, car sits level, no more warning lights, and headlights are properly aligned. Really glad I checked here first as it helped me better understand the potential issues and not get oversold on unnecessary repairs. If anyone else faces similar issues, definitely get the electrical connections checked first. These suspension components are complex but sometimes the fix is simpler than expected.
