S40 Wiper Failure

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2000 Volvo S40 diesel. The windshield wipers have completely stopped working. I checked the fuses, and they seem fine. Also, I scanned the car, and there's an error stored related to the wiper system. Could it be the wiper motor itself? Or maybe something simpler, like the switch?

Summary of the thread

The windshield wipers on a 2000 Volvo S40 diesel have stopped working, despite the fuses being intact. An error related to the wiper system was detected during a scan. Possible causes include a faulty wiper motor or a simpler issue like loose or corroded cable and plug connections near the steering column. Checking these connections is advised, and if unresolved, a visit to a workshop may be necessary.

I had a similar problem with my S40. Before you jump to replacing the motor, have you checked the cable and plug connections to the wiper switch? Sometimes those can become loose or corroded, causing intermittent or complete failure. Is your turn signal working correctly?

Interesting! No, I haven't checked the cable or plug connections specifically. Where exactly are they located? Do I have to take apart the whole steering column to get to them? That sounds like a pain. And yes, the turn signals are working just fine, which makes this even stranger.

The connections are indeed located near the steering column, which means some disassembly will be required. Given that the turn signals are functional, and you have an error code, a defective cable or plug connection is quite probable. At this point, I would recommend a visit to a workshop. The repair cost is relatively low; in my case, it was 95€.

Okay, thanks a lot for the advice! I'll check the connections first, but it sounds like a trip to the workshop is inevitable. At least I have a better idea of what to expect now. Hopefully, it's just a loose connection and nothing too serious. I appreciate you sharing your experience; it's a huge help!
