Safrane gearbox slipping grinding noises
Summary of the thread
The 2000 Renault Safrane diesel is experiencing gearbox issues, including slipping, grinding noises, and slow response, with the gearbox in emergency mode. The error memory indicates a problem with the transmission control unit, which is suspected to be the cause. Checking the wiring harness and connections is suggested, but if the error code points directly to the control unit, it is likely defective and may need replacement. Visiting a workshop for professional diagnosis and repair is recommended to prevent further damage.

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the connections, and they seem fine. So you really think it's the control unit itself? Did you replace yours? What was the final cost?

Yes, unfortunately. All the signs pointed to the control unit. In my case, cleaning the connections didn't help. You can try and measure the signals going in and out of the unit, but you need the proper tools and wiring diagrams. Since you’re getting grinding noises, driving it may cause further damage, so I would recommend you visit a workshop.

Alright, I understand. Thanks a lot for confirming my suspicions and sharing your experience. I’ll take it to a shop to get the unit replaced. They quoted around 1000€, which seems reasonable. Hopefully, that will solve the problem.

Hey there! Wow, that sounds remarkably similar to what happened with my Safrane. The symptoms you describe – the slipping, the grinding, and the emergency mode – are practically identical. I'd definitely look closely at that transmission control unit. Electronic issues can be a nightmare. Have you checked the wiring harness and connections to the unit? Sometimes it's just a loose or corroded connector causing all the trouble. But if the error code points directly to the control unit, it's very likely defective.
