Safrane lean running condition
Summary of the thread
A 1999 Renault Safrane diesel was experiencing a lean running condition, characterized by reduced power, rough running, and jerking, with the check engine light on. The initial suspicion was a defective injector. Another person suggested checking the mass air flow sensor, as they had a similar issue with a different car. Ultimately, a workshop diagnosis confirmed the injector was defective, and after replacement, the vehicle ran perfectly.

Thanks. How did you pinpoint the MAF sensor? Were there specific readings or tests that led you to that conclusion?

The diagnostic tool showed implausible readings from the mass air flow sensor. The air-fuel ratio was fluctuating erratically, causing the lean running condition. Given the complexity of fuel injection systems, I'd recommend a reputable workshop. They have the equipment to accurately diagnose the fault.

Following your advice, I took it to a workshop. The diagnosis confirmed a defective injector. The repair, including parts and labor, cost 515€. The Safrane runs perfectly now.

I had a similar issue with my old Opel Omega – loss of power, rough idling, and the check engine light. It turned out to be a faulty mass air flow sensor. It might be worth checking, even if you suspect the injector.
