Saxo ABS Fault

Hi, I've got a 2003 Citroen Saxo, electric engine, with almost 190k km on the clock and I'm experiencing some malfunction issues. The ABS lamp keeps lighting up, leading to traction problems, and essentially making the ABS system non-functional. I suspect it's related to a speed signal fault. Has anyone encountered something similar? The diagnostic points towards an affected control unit, but I'm not sure where to start.

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Citroen Saxo is experiencing ABS malfunction, with the ABS light illuminating and traction issues occurring. The problem is suspected to be related to a speed signal fault, potentially involving the ABS control unit. A similar issue was resolved by addressing a faulty speed sensor, which is part of the ABS system. It is recommended to consult a mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem, as tracing the issue independently can be time-consuming.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That sounds awfully familiar! I had a similar problem with my Saxo. ABS light was on all the time, and it was like driving on ice, the traction control was going haywire. Have you checked the input signals? Because in my case it was the speed sensor.

Interesting! Can you elaborate a bit more on 'input signals'? Where exactly should I be looking, and what am I looking for? I'm familiar with the basics, but I'm not exactly a mechanic. Is there a specific part I should check for failure?

Okay, think of it like this: the ABS needs to 'know' how fast the wheels are turning, right? So those sensors are like its eyes. For me, it was indeed a faulty speed sensor, which is part of the ABS control unit. If the diagnostic is already pointing to the control unit, it might just be worth taking it to a workshop. Because you could spend hours trying to trace the wiring. In my case, the sensor problem triggered the ABS light, and from there, everything went downhill. I would take it to a mechanic you trust.

Thanks a lot for the insight! I appreciate the detailed explanation and the analogy. It sounds like my issue is probably the same. I'll take it to a local mechanic I trust, I was hoping to avoid that as they are going to charge me around 1000€ to fix it, but at least now I have an idea of what to tell them. I will let you know what happens!
