Saxo Gear Shift Indicator Failure

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my 2003 Citroen Saxo (gasoline engine). The gear shift indicator on the dash is completely dead. I can't see what gear I'm in, and it's causing all sorts of problems. Sometimes it feels like the gearbox is slipping, other times it shifts really harshly. I even get some grinding noises occasionally. I ran a diagnostic check and it's throwing up an error related to the TCM (Transmission Control Module). Could it be a dodgy sensor on the gear selector, or is the display itself kaput?

Summary of the thread

The gear shift indicator on a 2003 Citroen Saxo is not functioning, causing issues like gearbox slipping, harsh shifting, and grinding noises. A diagnostic check revealed an error related to the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Possible causes include a faulty TCM or a connection issue in the wiring harness. It is suggested to have the vehicle diagnosed by a professional to confirm the TCM's condition and address the problem effectively.

I had something similar happen in my Saxo. Symptoms sound almost identical to what I experienced. Did you notice any implausible shifting behavior? The error codes related to the gearbox are often misleading. Have you checked the wiring harness and connections to the transmission control unit? It might be a simple connection issue.

Thanks for the quick reply! You mentioned wiring harness – where exactly should I be looking for that? Is it easily accessible, or am I going to need to start dismantling half the car to get to it? And were you also experiencing the 'gear selection display without function' issue?

Yes, the 'gear selection display without function' issue was present in my case as well. The wiring harness is usually located near the gearbox itself, but accessibility can be a pain, depending on your tools and experience. Frankly, given the grinding noises and error codes, the problem is likely the TCM. Best advice is to get it diagnosed by someone with proper diagnostic equipment. A defective TCM can definitely cause the symptoms you're describing.

Okay, thanks for confirming. I suspected it might be the TCM, given the symptoms and the error code. I'll book it in at a workshop to get it checked out. Estimate I got was around 1000€, so I hope that fixes it. Thanks again for the help!
