Scenic diesel EGR valve issue

Hi, I have a 2005 Renault Scenic diesel. Recently, I've noticed reduced engine power and the check engine light came on. Also, there's smoke when accelerating, the engine runs rough, and fuel consumption has increased. Sometimes it even jerks and there's a loud hissing noise when accelerating. Could this be an EGR valve issue?

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my Scenic (diesel as well). The hissing could indicate a vacuum leak, which is often linked to EGR problems. Basically, the EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions. When it's stuck or faulty, it messes with the air-fuel mixture, leading to those symptoms. Have you checked for any obvious leaks around the valve or its vacuum lines?

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't checked for leaks specifically. Where exactly should I be looking around the EGR valve?

Well, visually inspect all the hoses connected to the EGR valve. The EGR valve is usually located near the intake manifold. Look for cracks, breaks, or if any hoses are disconnected. A simple way to check for vacuum leaks is to spray a little bit of carb cleaner (carefully!) around the hoses and connections while the engine is running. If the engine idle changes, that could indicate a leak. But honestly, with all those symptoms, it's probably best to get it checked by a workshop. My issue was a jammed EGR and I had to replace it.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a workshop and they confirmed it was the EGR valve. Replacement cost me 355€. Runs like new now.
