Scirocco TDI's High Fuel Use Linked to Throttle Issues
Summary of the thread
The Scirocco 2.0 TDI was experiencing high fuel consumption and starting issues, suspected to be due to throttle body or throttle position sensor problems. Similar symptoms were reported by another driver, who found that carbon buildup in the throttle body and a failing throttle position sensor were causing the issues. The recommended solution involved cleaning the throttle body, replacing the sensor, and inspecting the air intake system. After these repairs, both vehicles returned to normal fuel efficiency and performance, highlighting the importance of regular throttle body maintenance to prevent such problems.

Thanks for sharing those details about the throttle cleaning repair. My Scirocco had the exact same symptoms last month. The engine throttle was definitely struggling and the fuel consumption was terrible. Got it fixed and running great now. Quick question, do you remember the total cost for the repairs? Also, has everything stayed working properly since the fix?

Just got your message about the repair costs. My experience with the throttle body service was completely worth it, paid 205€ to fix the defective accelerator pedal module. Since the repair, the engine throttle response has been perfect and fuel efficiency is back to normal levels. The air intake system is working smoothly now, and I have not experienced any of the previous issues with rough idling or starting problems. The investment in proper throttle cleaning and repair has definitely paid off in terms of improved performance and reduced fuel consumption. Its been several months since the fix, and the car runs like new. No more struggles with the throttle control or engine performance issues that were causing all those problems before. The mechanic mentioned regular throttle body maintenance can prevent these issues from recurring.

Going to share what happened with my repair since others might find it helpful. Finally got the car sorted at a different shop last week. The mechanic found heavy carbon deposits blocking the throttle valve, exactly like mentioned above. Total bill came to 180€ for the throttle body cleaning and sensor replacement. The car throttle response is now perfect and fuel consumption dropped back to normal. Engine starts smoothly every time and the rough idle is completely gone. The new shop did a thorough job with the air intake system inspection and showed me the carbon buildup they cleaned out. Pretty shocking to see how blocked everything was. Really glad I got it fixed rather than letting it get worse. The car has been running great for the past week with zero issues. Definitely learned my lesson about regular throttle body maintenance. Going to stick with this new mechanic from now on, they really knew what they were doing with the engine throttle system.

Experienced similar issues with my Golf GTD 2.0 TDI (2012). The symptoms match exactly, increased fuel consumption, rough idle, and hesitation during startup. The problem turned out to be a combination of a dirty throttle body and a failing throttle position sensor. The throttle cleaning procedure revealed significant carbon buildup blocking proper air intake flow. This was affecting the throttle position readings and causing the ECU to compensate with extra fuel, explaining the poor fuel efficiency. The repair required: Complete throttle body removal and cleaning, Replacement of throttle position sensor, ECU adaptation after installation, Air intake system inspection This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention, as continuing to drive could have led to complete throttle failure and potential stalling. The carbon deposits were affecting both throttle response and engine performance. After the repair, the fuel consumption returned to normal, idle smoothed out, and cold starts improved significantly. Would strongly recommend getting the throttle body checked, as these symptoms typically worsen over time if left unaddressed. Given your mileage, its likely time for a thorough throttle body service to restore proper fuel efficiency and engine performance.
