Metal shavings, eh? Where exactly do I check for those? And is it something obvious, or do I need to, like, drain the whole thing?

Yeah, you'll need to check the transfer fluid. If you see any glittery bits in the fluid, that's the metal. It's a sign of gear wear. Honestly, if it's slipping, you are likely past just topping it off. Get it to a workshop; defective gears in the transfer case can grenade the whole system. You don't want to risk that.

Massive thanks for your help. Turns out it was indeed the transfer case. Gears were properly chewed up. Got it sorted for 330€, which I reckon is a decent price all things considered. Shifts like new now!

Sounds like a transfer case issue. I had a similar thing with my Alhambra. Check your transfer fluid for any signs of metal shavings. Gear grinding noises are a telltale sign.
