Seat Alhambra VANOS issue

My 2005 Seat Alhambra with a gasoline engine has a check engine light and increased fuel consumption at 134699 km. Diagnostics suggest a fault within the inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves or a lack of power supply. Could this also be related to engine misfire? I understand a potential repair could reach 250€. Any insights or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar issue with my Alhambra, check engine light and all. Have you checked the camshaft position sensor? They can get gunked up, especially if there's any oil sludge.

Where exactly is the camshaft position sensor located, and is it easy to access? When you say 'gunked up,' are we talking about typical engine grime, or something more serious?

It was definitely oil sludge. The sensor is usually near the inlet camshaft, kind of tucked away. You can probably get to it, but honestly, I'd suggest a workshop. They can properly diagnose if it's just the sensor or something more serious with the VANOS system itself. Could save you a headache. Plus, they can check for any hidden BMW VANOS issues that might be lurking.

Took the Alhambra to a trusted mechanic, as suggested. The inlet camshaft solenoid valve was indeed choked with oil sludge. After replacement and a thorough engine flush, the check engine light is off, and the fuel consumption is back to normal. Thanks a lot for the advice!
