Seat Altea Diesel Performance Problems

Alright, I'm a bit stumped here. My 2009 Seat Altea, diesel engine, is giving me grief. It's done 84202 km. I've noticed a definite performance decline, and the fuel economy has gone down the drain. Sometimes it even stalls when idling. The check engine light is on, and I'm seeing some smoke when I accelerate. I'm suspecting the mass air flow meter (LMM) is the culprit. Anyone else had similar issues?

That sounds very familiar. I had similar issues with my Altea – though I have the petrol version. Higher fuel consumption, and occasional stalling at idle. The CEL lit up too. Have you checked your air filter? A clogged filter can sometimes mimic mass air flow sensor problems. A diagnostic scan should confirm the sensor is the issue. When the MAF malfunctions, the ECU receives incorrect data, leading to an improper air-fuel mixture. This can cause a performance decline and affect fuel economy.

I did check the air filter, it looked okay. You mention a diagnostic scan - did you get one done? And was it definitely the mass air flow sensor that was causing your issues? I'm trying to avoid throwing money at it if possible.

Yes, I ran a diagnostic scan, and it pointed directly to the mass air flow sensor failure. Given your symptoms – higher fuel consumption, stalling, check engine light, smoke, and performance decline – a faulty MAF sensor is the most probable cause. It is definitely worth getting it checked at a workshop.

Big thanks for your help! I took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on. It was indeed the mass air flow sensor. They replaced it, and the car is running smoothly again. Total cost was 365€, which included the sensor and labor. Really appreciate your insight!
