Seat Altea Engine Noise Belt Tensioner Issue

My 2011 Seat Altea with a gasoline engine has developed a nasty engine noise. The belt-handover isn't working anymore; it's completely gone. I suspect the belt tensioner itself is defective. Has anyone else had this issue? It's like the belt is loose, but only intermittently. I'm thinking it's not keeping constant tension on the belt drive.

Sounds like a belt tensioner issue to me. Had similar engine noise with my Altea, turned out the tensioner wasn't doing its job. Check the serpentine belt too while you're at it. Is the belt drive itself damaged?

Interesting. When you say 'similar', do you mean the belt was jumping off completely? I've checked the belt, and it looks okay, but the tensioner seems weak. How difficult was the replacement? Was it a garage job, or did you do it yourself?

Yeah, by 'similar' I mean the belt wasn't jumping off completely, but it was definitely misbehaving due to lack of tension. Like a badly tuned guitar string. Best get the tensioner checked at a workshop. If the handover's gone, it's likely the tensioner's failed internally. Not a job for the driveway unless you're properly equipped.

Got it sorted. The belt tensioner was indeed the problem. Garage confirmed it was faulty and replaced it. Total cost came to 455€. Thanks for the heads up!
