Seat Altea Power Steering Problem

I'm experiencing some issues with the power steering on my 2007 Seat Altea with a gasoline engine. The car has 176964 km on the clock. Recently, I've noticed the steering wheel vibrating and shaking, and the handling feels spongy. I've checked the error memory and there's a stored error related to the power steering. Sometimes, it feels like the power steering has failed altogether, requiring significantly more effort to steer. From what I've read, a likely cause is a defective cable or plug connection. Does anyone have any experience with this? It feels like trying to steer a boat without a rudder!

Summary of the thread

The 2007 Seat Altea experienced power steering issues, including a vibrating steering wheel and spongy handling, with an error code indicating a power steering problem. A potential cause was identified as a defective cable or plug connection. Suggestions included checking the hydraulic fluid level and inspecting the pressure hose for leaks. Ultimately, a workshop diagnosed and fixed a defective plug connection on the power steering unit, resolving the issue.

I had a similar issue with my Altea, though I can't remember the exact year. The symptoms you describe sound familiar, vibrating steering wheel and the spongy feeling. I would first check the hydraulic fluid level for the power steering. It might be a simple fix. Also, inspect the pressure hose. A leak there could cause similar problems.

Thanks for the quick reply. When you say 'pressure hose', do you mean the one connected directly to the steering pump? Also, is there anything specific I should look for when checking the hydraulic fluid level besides whether it's low? Any specific color or consistency?

Yes, I meant the hose connected to the steering pump. As for the fluid, check for discoloration or any particles. It should be relatively clean. However, in my case, the fluid level and condition were fine. It turned out to be an electrical issue. Given that you already have an error code stored, it might be best to take it to a workshop. They can diagnose the electrical connections properly. It could save you time and potential further issues with the steering rack.

I took the Altea to a workshop. They found a defective plug connection on the power steering unit, like you said. They replaced the connector and now the power steering is working perfectly. The total cost was 95€ Thanks again for your help!
