Fluid level? Where do I even check that? And is the gearbox sensor the same as the transmission sensor?

Yes, gearbox sensor and transmission sensor are the same thing. Checking the fluid level yourself can be tricky depending on your mechanical skill. Given the emergency mode and grinding noises, it is best to take it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose the transmission issues.

Thanks for the help! I took it to the workshop, and it was the transmission sensor. They also said the gearbox oil level was low, which probably caused the sensor to fail. Cost me 365€ for the transmission repair!

I had similar transmission issues with my Altea. The symptoms you describe point toward a faulty gearbox sensor. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? Low fluid can cause those problems.
