Seat Arosa diesel engine trouble

I'm having some trouble with my 2002 Seat Arosa, diesel engine. The engine just won't start sometimes, and when it does, it stalls at idle. The check engine light is also on. It's running rough, and fuel consumption is higher than usual. The error memory says the fuel pump is defective. Could this be a simple fix? I'm thinking maybe it's just a bad connection, like a faulty cable or plug connection?

Summary of the thread

The 2002 Seat Arosa diesel engine is experiencing starting issues, stalling at idle, rough running, and increased fuel consumption, with the check engine light on. The error memory indicates a defective fuel pump, which could be due to a bad connection, such as a faulty cable or plug. A suggested solution is to inspect the fuel pump relay and wiring harness for corrosion or damage. The problem was resolved by cleaning a corroded connector on the fuel pump, leading to improved engine performance.

Sounds like a classic fuel pump issue. I had a similar problem with my old Renault Clio. Engine would stall at idle, and car performance was terrible. First thing to check is the fuel pump relay and the wiring harness. Any stored error codes?

Wiring harness, you say? Where exactly is that located, and what should I be looking for? The error code pointed to a fuel pump failure, but maybe it's just a symptom of something else.

Yes, the wiring harness connects directly to the fuel pump. Check for any corrosion or damage to the wires and the connector itself. Since you're getting fuel pump failure codes and the symptoms match, it's highly likely the root cause. If you're not comfortable doing electrical work, I suggest taking it to a workshop. Much easier that way and a quick auto repair.

I took your advice and brought the Arosa to the shop. It was a corroded connector on the fuel pump, like you suspected. They cleaned it, and it's running fine. Cost me 95€, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
