Seat Arosa NOx and Exhaust Issues

Right, I'm at my wit's end! My 2003 Seat Arosa, gasoline engine, with 125682 km on the clock, has thrown up the check engine light again. Car diagnostics says it's the NOx storage catalyst aging. I've also got a noticeable exhaust leak. Could the exhaust leak be causing this? I'm worried about fuel efficiency and air quality here. Is this going to break the bank with automotive repair costs?

Whoa, sounds rough! I had something similar happen with my Arosa (don't remember the year), and it turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold. Is the exhaust REALLY loud, or more of a subtle hissing?

Hissing is a good way to describe it, not super loud, but definitely noticeable, especially on cold starts. Manifold, eh? Where exactly was the crack on yours? Was it easy to spot?

Yep, mine was a hissing sound too. It was tricky to see the crack at first, but the mechanic used some smoke to find it. Honestly, I'd get it checked at a workshop; messing with the exhaust system is a pain. It could be something simple, but best to be sure, especially with that NOx catalyst error.

Took it to the workshop as you suggested. Turns out the exhaust was leaking, just like you said. New exhaust section fitted, cost me about 265€, and the light's gone! Thanks a million for your help!
