I haven't tried a software reset myself. Is that something I can do without special equipment, or am I better off taking it to a workshop?

A software issue is a strong possibility given the symptoms. Recalibration is often the fix. Unless you're familiar with using diagnostic tools and flashing software, it's best to leave it to a professional. Messing with the control unit programming without proper knowledge can brick it. The cost sounds reasonable for the work involved.

Took the Ateca to the shop. They confirmed the software issue and recalibrated the control unit. Everything seems to be working now. Thanks for the help!

Sounds like a classic software glitch. Have you checked for any pending software fixes through the onboard diagnostics? Sometimes a simple software reset can do the trick. What error codes are you seeing?
