Seat Ateca Transfer Case Oil Wear

My 2020 Seat Ateca with a gasoline engine has done 182472 km and I'm getting a transfer case oil wear fault. Gearbox feels like it's slipping, shifts aren't clean. Thinking it might be defective gears. Anyone else had this?

Unclean shifts on a 2020 Ateca could be a few things, especially with that mileage. Is the 'transfer case' the same as the gearbox or are you referring to the differential? Have you considered a simple oil change for the transmission first? Sometimes that alone can make a big difference, despite the gear wear.

When you say 'simple oil change', what kind of transfer fluid are we talking about? Is there a specific type that's better for gear grinding if mechanical wear is suspected? Is the gearbox and the differential the same thing?

Okay, so a simple oil change means replacing the transfer fluid in your gearbox with fresh, manufacturer-recommended fluid. I was wondering if you meant differential fluid. I see your gearbox slipping is likely due to gear wear which is causing 'gear grinding', meaning particles are suspended in the old oil causing friction where you don't want it. If the oil change doesn't solve it, and it sounds like it might not, you're probably looking at a more serious mechanical wear issue. I'd suggest getting it checked by a workshop.

Got the transfer case oil changed and you were spot on. It was the mechanical wear, defective gears confirmed during inspection. Cost me 330€, but shifts are smooth again. Thanks for the help.
