Seat Cordoba automatic transmission issue

I'm pulling my hair out here! My 2000 Seat Cordoba with a gasoline engine is giving me grief. It's got some kilometers on the clock. The check engine light is on and the transmission light too! The gearbox slips and shifts all weird, plus there's this grinding noise when it changes gears. I scanned it, and it's showing an error, something about the automatic transmission converter. Could it be converter failure?

Sounds familiar. I had something similar happen with my Cordoba's automatic transmission. Check engine light and all. Was the car jerking a bit when shifting? If so, it could be the lock-up clutch in the torque converter acting up. Basically, the torque converter helps transfer power from the engine to the transmission. The lock-up clutch is supposed to create a more direct connection at certain speeds to improve efficiency.

Yeah, it was jerking quite a bit and sometimes felt like it was slipping. Grinding noises too! What exactly is converter failure and the lock-up clutch, and what did you do to fix it?

Sounds very similar to what I experienced. The lock-up clutch inside the torque converter probably failed. That would explain the slipping and the grinding. Unfortunately, you're probably looking at replacing or rebuilding the torque converter. It's not a small job. You need to get it checked by someone who knows automatic transmissions, and who can confirm the problem. I ended up taking mine to a transmission specialist.

Thanks a bunch! You were right. I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed torque converter failure. Ouch! It's costing me around 2120€ to get it sorted. At least I know what was wrong. Appreciate the help!
