Seat Cordoba Overheating Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Seat Cordoba is experiencing severe engine overheating and delayed warming to normal operating temperature. The suspected cause is a defective map thermostat, though other potential issues like coolant leaks and cooling fan operation were considered. After consulting with others and checking for leaks, the thermostat was confirmed as the problem by a mechanic, who replaced it and resolved the issue.

Thanks for the reply! I did check for coolant leak, but couldn't find anything obvious. The cooling fan seems to be working, but honestly, I haven't paid super close attention to when it kicks in. When yours was doing this, did the temperature sensor on the dash also show higher than normal readings, or was it more subtle?

Given that your temperature sensor is showing abnormal readings, and you've ruled out any coolant leak, it does point even stronger towards the thermostat being the problem. While it's something you could tackle yourself, diagnosing it definitively often requires specialized equipment to properly read the temperature control and sensor data. Considering the potential for further issues if not done right, my advice would be to take it to a reputable workshop.

Thanks for the tip! I ended up taking it to a mechanic, and you were spot on – it was the thermostat. They replaced it, flushed the system, and now the temperature control is perfect. Cost me around 350€, which is what I expected. Appreciate the help!

Interesting issue. I once had a similar problem with my Cordoba. The engine was taking forever to warm up, and I noticed some occasional overheating. Before you dive into replacing parts, have you thoroughly checked for any coolant leak? A small leak can cause both of those symptoms. Also, is your cooling fan kicking in as it should? Those are easy things to check. While a defective map thermostat is possible, don't rule out other potential causes just yet.
