Seat Exeo Diesel Preheating Lamp Issue

Need some wisdom here. My 2011 Seat Exeo diesel is giving me grief. The preheating lamp refuses to switch off, and the check engine light is now illuminated. It's got about 59519 km on the clock. To top it off, there's some noticeable smoke during acceleration. I suspect a defective preheating control unit. I've visually inspected the wiring and plug connections to the preheating unit, and they look suspect. Could be a defective part, or am I facing a car electronics nightmare? Any thoughts?

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Seat Exeo diesel is experiencing issues with the preheating lamp not turning off and the check engine light being illuminated, accompanied by noticeable smoke during acceleration. The suspected cause is a defective preheating control unit, with visual inspection revealing potentially faulty wiring and plug connections. A suggestion to check the glow plugs was made, but ultimately, a workshop visit confirmed the preheating unit and its cable connection were the problem, leading to a successful repair.

Sounds familiar. Had a similar headache with my old BMW 3 Series. Same symptoms: preheating lamp going nuts and the check engine light popping on. Electrical faults can be a real pain. Have you checked the glow plugs themselves? Sometimes they short out and can cause the control unit to act up.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't checked the glow plugs directly yet. How did you troubleshoot that on your BMW? Any specific tools or methods you'd recommend?

On the BMW, it turned out the preheating unit was the defective part. A multimeter helped diagnose the electrical fault and confirm the preheating unit wasn't getting the correct signals. Given your visual inspection, I'd say a trip to a workshop with diagnostic equipment might be your best bet. They can pinpoint the issue precisely and avoid you chasing ghosts.

Took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. It was the preheating unit and its cable connection. New part and labor cost me 95€. Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction.
