Seat Exeo Engine Trouble

I'm in a bind! My 2008 Seat Exeo with a gasoline engine is throwing a fit. The check engine light is on, the engine runs rough, there's an exhaust leak smell, and the fumes are strong. My gut feeling is a defective lambda sensor. Has anyone else had similar issues? I want to fix it myself but am not sure where to start.

Whoa, exhaust treatment malfunction on a Seat Exeo can be tricky! Since it's a gasoline engine, DEF fluid and NOx sensors aren't the usual suspects like they would be on a diesel. The rough running and strong exhaust smell, combined with the engine light, points to a fueling or emissions issue. Have you checked for any obvious leaks in the exhaust pipe itself? Sometimes a small crack can cause a big headache. Is the engine light flashing, or is it a solid light?

Okay, a solid engine light is slightly less urgent than a flashing one, but still needs sorting. And yes, a dodgy lambda sensor can cause all those problems. Think of it like this: the lambda sensor is your engine's nose, sniffing the exhaust to tell the ECU if the air/fuel mixture is correct. If it's giving bad readings, the ECU can't adjust properly, leading to rough running, incomplete combustion, and potentially damage to other components. While you could check the exhaust pipe, the fact you have all those symptoms with the engine light on strongly suggests the lambda. Going to a workshop might be the best shout; diagnosing lambda sensors can be fiddly without the right gear.

I haven't spotted any leaks in the exhaust pipe, but it's hard to get a good look without taking things apart. The engine light is solid, not flashing. You mentioned fueling or emissions - could a faulty lambda sensor really cause all these symptoms, including the rough running and strong exhaust smell? I was under the impression the exhaust pipe would not cause these issues.

Dude, thanks! I went to a trusted workshop; they confirmed the lambda sensor was the problem. A new sensor is in, and the engine light is gone! It was about 375€, but worth it to get rid of that exhaust smell and rough running. Appreciate the help!
