Seat Exeo Headlight Range Control Fault

Alright, I'm officially stumped! My 2011 Seat Exeo with a diesel engine is throwing a headlight range control fault. The error is stored in the error memory, and there's a warning light glowing in the speedometer. The low beam shines either too far up or too far down, it's all over the place. I've only clocked 63343 km. Could a defective servomotor in the headlight be the culprit? Any ideas on what to check before I end up at the mercy of a mechanic? Any help is appreciated!

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Seat Exeo is experiencing a headlight range control fault, causing the low beam to shine inconsistently. The issue could be due to a defective servomotor in the headlight. Suggested checks include inspecting electrical connectors for corrosion or looseness and determining if the car has adaptive headlights. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be a defective servomotor, requiring replacement at a workshop.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar! I had something similar happen with my Exeo. Check the electrical connectors to the headlight first. Sometimes they get corroded or loose. Also, is your Exeo equipped with adaptive headlights? If so, that could be related. If it is not something obvious, the workshop is the way to go.

Thanks, that's helpful! Where exactly are those electrical connectors located? And how would I check them for corrosion? I'm not very experienced with car electrics, but I'm willing to give it a try before taking it to a workshop. Also, I'm not sure about the adaptive headlights, how can I check that?

Yes, the electrical connectors are at the back of the headlight unit itself. You'll probably need to remove the headlight to get good access. As for adaptive headlights, if yours has them, they will move when you start the car. But honestly, based on what you're describing, it really does sound like a servomotor issue. I ended up taking mine to the workshop, as I didn't want to mess with the auto-leveling system. They sorted it out quickly.

Huge thanks for the insights! I took it to a workshop and you were spot on. Turns out it was a defective servomotor in the headlight, just like you said. Had to replace the whole unit and the bill came to around 1040€. Ouch! But at least the lighting system is working perfectly again. Appreciate the help!
