Seat Exeo rough running at idle

I have a technical problem concerning my 2008 Seat Exeo with a gasoline engine. At approximately 103418 km, the engine has begun running rough, most noticeably at idle, where it occasionally stalls. Furthermore, acceleration is accompanied by a distinct jerking sensation. I suspect a fault within the ignition system, specifically, a defective ignition coil. Given the symptoms, I hypothesize that the cable or plug connection of the component may be defective. Any insights or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Summary of the thread

The 2008 Seat Exeo is experiencing rough idling and occasional stalling, with jerking during acceleration. The suspected cause is a fault in the ignition system, possibly a defective ignition coil or its connections. A visual inspection for damaged wires or loose connections is recommended, and swapping the ignition coil to another cylinder can help identify the issue. Ultimately, a diagnostic scan at a workshop is advised for precise identification, leading to the replacement of a defective ignition coil cable, resolving the problem.

Rough running and stalling could be due to a misfire. I had a similar issue with my old Renault Megane. Check the coil pack and spark plugs. A faulty connection can cause these symptoms. Has the check engine light illuminated?

Thanks for the quick reply. Regarding the coil pack, is there a specific method to test the connections, or is it more of a visual inspection for corrosion and loose fittings? Also, the check engine light is indeed on.

Visual inspection is a good start. Look for damaged wires or loose connections. Since the check engine light is on, it's almost certainly a misfire. You can try swapping the ignition coil to another cylinder to see if the misfire follows. But honestly, with those symptoms, a workshop visit for a diagnostic scan is probably the most efficient way to pinpoint the exact issue. Good luck.

It seems the likely culprit was indeed a defective ignition coil, or rather, the cable leading to it. A replacement, along with labor, set me back 95€. Engine is running smoothly again. Thanks for the advice.
