Seat Ibiza Diesel Engine Power Loss and Smoke

My 2001 Seat Ibiza with a diesel engine is showing some worrying signs. I've noticed reduced engine power and smoke when accelerating. Mileage is at 51418 km. Suspecting a defective diesel particulate filter. Any ideas?

I'm no expert, but that sounds like what happened with my old Vauxhall Corsa. Same symptoms: reduced engine power and smoke when accelerating. Could be a sensor fault triggering the engine light, but I'd be worried it is the DPF. Is the engine light on?

Interesting. The engine light is indeed on. Did you try a DPF cleaning, or did you go straight for filter replacement?

I didn't bother with DPF cleaning to be honest. A mechanic suggested that filter replacement was the only reliable solution in my case. I'd get it checked out by a professional to be sure though.

After a vehicle inspection, the DPF was indeed defective. I opted for a filter replacement to solve the reduced engine power and smoke issues. Cost me around 1550€.
