Seat Ibiza Gear Shift Indicator Problems

Alright, I'm stumped. My 2011 Seat Ibiza with a gasoline engine is throwing fits. The gear shift indicator display is dead, and I can't properly engage any gear. It's slipping, shifting rough, grinding noises sometimes, and there's an error code stored. All signs point to a defective control unit, which means a hefty 1000€ bill. Anyone else seen this? I suspect it is a sensor problem, maybe something wrong with the car dashboard or instrument panel?

I experienced a somewhat analogous situation with my Seat Ibiza. The symptoms you described – implausible shifting, gearbox slippage, and error codes – bear a striking resemblance to my previous predicament. I would like to ask if you have checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Is there any unusual color or smell? Also, have you scanned the car for any stored diagnostic trouble codes beyond the gear selection display malfunction?

Fluid level seemed okay when I checked it, no weird smells or discoloration either. Yes, there's an error code related to the gear selection sensor. Did you also have a sensor problem? Was the electronic display completely dead, or just flickering?

Affirmative. The electronic display in my instrument panel exhibited complete failure. All diagnostics indicated a control unit malfunction. Given the diagnostic trouble code you mentioned, pertaining to the gear selection sensor, it would seem the affected control unit is indeed defective. I must, with a degree of certainty, recommend consulting a certified automotive technician. The cost is unfortunately inevitable, based on my own experience.

Took it to a garage and, as feared, the control unit was defective. 1000€ later and it's finally fixed. Thanks for the insight; it prepared me for the bad news.
